Sources and how the quizzes work

Where the flags, capitals, maps, population and province data on this site come from, and how the quizzes are scored.

Countries

The site covers 195 countries: the 193 UN member states plus the two UN observer states, Vatican City and Palestine.

Names, capitals and population

Country names, capitals, province names, province capitals and population come from Wikidata (CC0), fetched on September 29, 2026. Population is the latest figure Wikidata lists, shown with its year. ISO codes, areas, borders, languages and currencies come from the world-countries dataset (ODbL).

Flags

Flag images come from the flag-icons project (MIT licence).

Maps

Country maps use Natural Earth 1:50m boundaries (public domain) through the world-atlas package. Province and state maps use geoBoundaries ADM1 boundaries (gbOpen, licences listed per country below). Borders follow those datasets, with one exception: this site shows Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh as part of Pakistan. Maps are simplified so they load fast, so small details are smoothed.

How scoring works

Multiple-choice quizzes score one point per correct first answer. Map quizzes give three tries per place and score a point only for the first try. Your best score is saved in your browser (localStorage) and never sent anywhere.

Corrections

Capitals and borders change. If you spot an error, the fix usually belongs in Wikidata first, and the next rebuild of this site picks it up.
